The actual concentration

Live Nation holds exclusive ticketing arrangements with hundreds of venues and manages several hundred major artists. The US Department of Justice filed an antitrust complaint in May 2024 seeking, among other remedies, the divestiture of Ticketmaster, joined by a long list of states. The case moved through discovery toward a 2026 trial and reached a settlement stage in March 2026.

Whatever the final outcome, none of it changes what next Friday looks like for a band playing a 120-capacity room in New Haven. This is weather, not a decision you get to make.

What is actually yours

Ticketing is one layer. Underneath it sits the relationship with the individual human who bought the ticket, and that layer is only owned by a platform if you never bothered to claim it.

• Who came. A ticketing platform knows. You can know too, if you capture in the room.
• How to reach them again without paying a toll to anybody.
• What they bought from you directly, at the table or on your own store.
• Which town they live in, the single most useful field for a band working a circuit.
• Whether they hear about the next show from you or from an algorithm.

Why this is not a doom post

At the level most bands operate, the majors are not the obstacle. Nobody at Live Nation is stopping you filling a taproom in Danbury. The obstacle is that most bands have no mechanism for turning a good night into a fact they can use in three months.

Own the layer that is available to you, and the rest is somebody else's court case.
