The National Independent Venue Association ran the first large-scale economic study of the independent live sector and published it in 2025. Two numbers from it explain most of what confuses bands about booking.

An enormous, economically vital sector, in which most operators are losing money. Both things are true at once, and the second one is the one that determines whether you get a Friday.

How to read this as a band

When a booker does not answer your email, the instinct is to take it personally or to conclude the scene is a closed shop. Usually it is neither. It is that they are running a business with almost no margin and cannot take a risk on an unknown quantity on a good night.

Reframe what you are actually asking for. You are not asking for artistic validation. You are asking a business under real financial pressure to give you an evening of their limited inventory. The only question they need answered is whether people will come.

Why this makes the local rooms more valuable, not less

Thin margins mean venues are extremely loyal to acts that reliably fill the room on an otherwise quiet night. That loyalty is worth more than it sounds. It becomes better slots, better splits, first call on a support, and an actual relationship.

The way in is to be genuinely low risk. Show up, play the agreed time, bring people, do not cause problems at load-out, and be able to demonstrate the draw. That is a bar most bands never clear, which is exactly why clearing it works.

The part that is on us

Being able to prove a draw requires having captured it. If you have played thirty shows and kept no record of who came, you have thirty nights of evidence you cannot use.
