The Connecticut venue ladder: which rooms to play, in what order

Nobody hands you a map of the Connecticut circuit. You work it out by playing the wrong rooms for two years, emailing bookers who were never going to answer, and slowly noticing which bands moved up and what they did differently.

Here is the shortcut. Four rungs, and what each one wants from you.

Rung one: taprooms, pubs, and the back room with a PA

Paid gigs where nobody at the door checks your streaming numbers. In the Danbury corridor that means Sugar Hollow Taproom in Danbury, which runs bands Friday and Saturday plus an open mic on Wednesday and an open jam on Thursday with backline provided. Housatonic River Brewing in New Milford books covers and tributes solidly Thursday through Saturday. Notch8 in Bethel, My Place in Newtown, Charter Oak Brewing and Molly Darcy's in Danbury, Fast Eddie's in New Milford.

What this rung wants: that you show up, play the time you agreed, and bring some people. That is genuinely it. This is also where the merch table starts earning, which matters more than the fee.

Rung two: real clubs with real sound

Ticketed rooms with a booker, an engineer, and a door split. Cafe Nine in New Haven at around 125 capacity is the best small originals room in the state. Space Ballroom in Hamden runs a few hundred and books touring originals with local support. Park City Music Hall in Bridgeport, Infinity Music Hall in Norfolk and Hartford, Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne and Warehouse.

What this rung wants: a draw. Not a good EP, a draw. They need to know that if they give you a Thursday, people come. This is exactly the wall a fan list gets you over, because a draw you can prove is a draw you can text.

Rung three: theatres and the big clubs

Toad's Place in New Haven at 750. The Webster in Hartford, main room and Underground. District Music Hall in Norwalk. The Ridgefield Playhouse at 500, the most consistently programmed stage in the western corridor. College Street Music Hall. The Palace in Danbury. Edmond Town Hall in Newtown. The Kate on the shoreline.

What this rung wants: support slots first, and a press kit that does not embarrass you. At this level the guarantee matters more than the bar tab and somebody will look you up before they answer.

Rung four: casinos, amphitheatres, arenas

Mohegan Sun Arena, the Premier Theater at Foxwoods, Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, The Meadows in Hartford, Toyota Oakdale in Wallingford. Almost nobody reading this plays these next year. They are on the list because they are genuinely the top of the ladder, and because the bands that got there did the first three rungs deliberately.

The rooms that are gone

Worth knowing, because naming a dead venue in a booking email tells the reader you are not really from here.

• Tuxedo Junction in Danbury closed in 2016 and the building was demolished in December 2024. It is still the first room every local names.
• Cousin Larry's and the Heirloom Arts Theatre in Danbury are long gone.
• Widow Brown's closed in 2024 after 47 years.
• The Space and Outer Space in Hamden closed in 2017. Space Ballroom operates at that address now, so name that one instead.
• Ives Concert Park is dormant. Its authority was disbanded and its calendar is empty.

The open mic week is the least glamorous and most effective thing available to a band with nothing. My Place in Newtown on Tuesdays, Sugar Hollow in Danbury on Wednesdays with backline, the open jam there on Thursdays, Putnam House in Bethel on Sundays with signup at six.

Play three songs, meet the other bands, get the booker's name. That is how the second rung actually opens, far more often than through an email.
